Project Details

Sector: Social Housing

Value: £750K

Architects: ABIR Architects

Barnfield Road, Crawley

Working closely with Crawley Homes, a subsidiary of Crawley Borough Council,  an old retail building in Crawley was to be demolished and replaced with 8 new homes for the Housing Association's tenants.

Reviewing the scheme with the Client Team, it was established that the confines of the site and the shape of the structure lent itself ideally to a timber-framed building.  This consisted of 3 apartments on both the ground and 1st floor and 2 apartments in the mansard roof space.

In keeping with the desires of the Client to move towards a more environmentally friendly housing stock, mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems were installed in each apartment with LED lighting systems and high performance insulation.  This had the added benefit of keeping those essential running costs for the tenants to a minimum.

The Scheme was tendered and constructed as a full Design & Build Contract, thereby allowing the Client to de-risk the project whilst still being able to maintain influence over the final shape and aesthetic of the overall scheme.  As part of the overall design, space was made available for the provision of private parking for each unit whilst incorporating a large soft landscaped scheme for the enjoyment of those residents."
